A 17-year-old award-winning photographer and filmmaker will have a one-man show at River Road Gallery, which opens with an artist reception Saturday, Oct. 18, from 5 to 7.  Still Motion will feature the work of Daniel Bogaev of Weston.

Daniel has shot more than 10,000 photos and received first prize in photography in the Congressional Art Show, sponsored by Rep. Jim Himes (D-4th), and two ribbons at the Focus ‘14 Wilton Library photography show.

He also won a national C-SPAN filmmaking award for his film Investing in the Future: The Importance of Early Education in America. As a result, Daniel was invited by Gov. Dannel Malloy to attend the landmark signing of Public Act 14-39, dubbed the Smart Start Program.

River Road Gallery owner Roslyn Strizver said she offered to present Daniel’s photographs the moment she saw his work.

“It is the combination of one’s aesthetic talent and technical expertise that makes for a great photographer, and Bogaev has an abundance of both,” she said.

Still Motion will include candid portraits, landscapes, and still-life photographs. The show runs through Nov. 1. Proceeds from the sale of photos will be donated to Doctors Without Borders, an organization dedicated to helping people worldwide where the need is greatest, delivering emergency medical aid to people affected by conflict, epidemics, disasters or exclusion from health care.

“They are doing such important work, and I want to help,” Daniel said.

International photographer Daryl Hawk of Wilton called Daniel “one of those rare photographers I encounter when judging photography contests, who truly has a gift for the seeing the ordinary as extraordinary and then orchestrating that moment into an exceptional photographic image.”

Daniel comes from a talented family. His mother is Barbara Schottenfeld is a critically acclaimed composer, lyricist, playwright and performer. His father, Paul Bogaev, is Grammy and Emmy award-winning music producer, composer and lyricist.

Investing in the future

Weston High School students Daniel Bogaev and James Willis were honored by C-SPAN Marketing Director Chellie Zou for their winning C-SPAN StudentCam documentary video contest entry, "Investing in the Future: The Importance of Early Education in America" during a reception Tuesday morning at the school. For the contest, students use video cameras to advocate for issues Congress should address. In total, 150 student and 53 teacher prizes, totaling $100,000 in cash prizes will be awarded for winning documentaries. Each year since 2006, C-SPAN has invited middle school students (grades 6-8) and high school students (grades 9-12) to produce short documentaries on an issue of national importance. This year, students used video cameras to answer the question, "What's the most important issue the U.S. Congress should consider in 2014?" In response, more than 4,800 students in 46 states and Washington, DC sent a total of 2,355 entries to C-SPAN this year-- nearly 25 percent more than the number of entries received in 2013. Students worked in teams or as individuals to address a wide range of public policy issues, from immigration to gun legislation to the environment.
